Lynn is a West Virginia educator.  She taught in Kanawha County elementary and middle schools for twenty-eight years and worked with for the West Virginia Department of Education for seven years.  For the past four years Lynn has supported classroom teachers in southern West Virginia in mathematics.  She has extensive experience in presenting professional development sessions related to mathematical content and strategies.  Lynn is currently an adjunct professor with Marshall University’s  Elementary Math Specialist program.

 

Fluency—More Than Speed (K-2)

Grade Level:  Kindergarten to Grade Two
Session Length:  2 hour or ½ day session
Focus:  Addition/Subtraction

This session will focus on developing fluency with addition and subtraction with young children.  The session will answer the following questions:
* What is fluency?
* How do I support the development of fluency with addition and subtraction?
* How do I assess fluency in young children?

This session will focus on the fluencies identified within the West Virginia College- and Career- Readiness Standards for Mathematics.  Teachers will explore the sequence of instruction, learning task and games, and strategies for assessing fluency in young children.

2 hour or ½ day session

Multiplication/Division

This session will focus on developing fluency with multiplication and division with students. The session will answer the following questions:

  • What is fluency?
  • How do I support the development of fluency with multiplication and division?
  • How do I assess fluency in young children?

This session will focus on the fluencies identified within the West Virginia College- and Career- Readiness Standards for Mathematics. Teachers will explore the sequence of instruction, learning task and games, and strategies for assessing fluency in young children.

 

Supporting Mathematical Educators

For Administrators
Session Length:  2 hour/1/2 day

This session will focus on assisting administrators as they support the teachers in the mathematics classroom.  The session will answer the following questions:
* What does effective mathematics instruction look like?
* What do I do if I do not understand the mathematics?
* Where do I go to help my teachers find effective resources?

This session will focus on recognizing student engagement in the mathematics classroom and tips for administrators as they interact with mathematics teachers.

Number Talks-Meaningful Conversations with Numbers

Session Length:  2 hour or ½ day session with a 2 hour or ½ day session follow-up approximately 1 month later

This session will focus on developing understanding of identified numbers and operations related to the numbers through meaningful conversations.  The session will answer the following questions:
* How do I begin using number talks in my classroom?
* How do I select or develop appropriate number talks that extend student understanding?
* How can number talks be used as formative assessment?

This session may be tailored to the books by Sherry Parrish or the session may develop number talks without the resource.

Tailor Made

2 hour/ ½ day/ 1 day

This session will be developed and designed in collaboration with the requesting educational school or district. Together the consultant and school/district will develop focus questions, timeline, and appropriate tasks. The consultant will design and deliver the sessions or provide the requested support
